This is the grandmother paradox — and it runs through almost every piece of technology that claims to serve families. The tools built to bridge the distance between generations most reliably exclude the people at both ends of the age spectrum. The people who could benefit most from connection are the ones most systematically left out.
Who Technology Is Actually Built For
Every design decision encodes an assumption about the user. Font sizes assume a certain vision. Touch targets assume a certain dexterity. Navigation patterns assume a certain comfort with digital abstraction. And the invisible default user in most technology products is somewhere between 25 and 45, urban, digitally fluent, and using technology on a fast new device with a large screen.
This is not a conspiracy. It is a consequence of where product teams sit in the age distribution and which audiences their business models optimize for. The 25-to-45 demographic adopts new platforms quickly, generates more data, and converts to premium subscriptions at rates that make them commercially attractive. Designing for this demographic first — and for everyone else as an afterthought, if at all — is the default mode of consumer technology development.
For family technology, this default is self-defeating. The stated purpose of a family platform is to connect people across generations: grandparents and grandchildren, aunts and toddlers, great-uncles and teenagers. Yet the design choices that serve the 35-year-old developer's intuitions often actively exclude the 75-year-old grandmother and the 6-year-old grandchild who are supposedly the point.

Small touch targets. Most apps were initially designed for desktop and then adapted to mobile with touch targets sized for young adults with fine motor control. Adults navigating arthritis, essential tremor, or the natural decline in finger dexterity that accompanies aging find these targets unreliable. A missed tap means an error; enough errors means abandonment.
Low contrast. Gray text on white backgrounds is a design trend that looks elegant in product screenshots and becomes functionally unreadable under fluorescent lighting for anyone with the contrast sensitivity changes common after age 60. This is not an obscure accessibility edge case — it is the experience of a large fraction of older users.
Interface churn. Software that updates frequently and changes its navigation structure with each version presents a particular challenge to users who learn interfaces through repeated practice. What a 30-year-old user finds as a minor adjustment requiring 30 seconds of exploration can require a 75-year-old user to essentially relearn the entire product. Each forced update that changes familiar interaction patterns erodes confidence and increases anxiety about using the platform.
Authentication complexity. Password management, two-factor authentication, and recovery flows that assume access to a specific email account or phone number create significant friction for older users who may have less established digital identity management habits. These are not impossible to solve — they are simply rarely prioritized.

Most major consumer platforms respond to this requirement by setting age minimums of 13 and implementing cursory age gates that children routinely bypass. The actual protection offered is minimal. The effect is that young children either use platforms they're not supposed to be on — where the content moderation and data practices are designed for adults — or they're excluded entirely from the family's digital life.
A genuinely age-inclusive family platform can't simply extend the adult product downward. Children need fundamentally different design: content that is appropriate for their developmental stage, zero advertising data collection, privacy protections that don't depend on children accurately self-reporting their age, and interaction patterns suited to children who are still developing reading skills.
The 6-year-old who can't navigate the family app that everyone else uses is missing something meaningful — not just convenience, but inclusion in the family's shared digital life at an age when that shared life is actively shaping their sense of belonging.
When Design Encodes a Values Statement
There's a version of this problem that can be framed as a technical accessibility challenge, and that framing is useful as far as it goes. But it misses something important.
When a family technology product excludes grandparents by design, it is not simply failing at a technical requirement. It is encoding a statement about whose experience matters. The design says, implicitly: this product is for the adults in the middle of the generational span. The people at either end — the elders and the young children — are secondary considerations, if they're considerations at all.
This matters because family technology is not a neutral medium. It shapes which relationships are easy and which are effortful. It determines who is a full participant in the family's digital life and who is a peripheral recipient of summaries. Over years, these design choices accumulate into patterns of connection and disconnection that affect family relationships in real ways.
An app that makes it easy for a grandmother to share a voice message with her 7-year-old grandchild — without requiring password management, without churn-prone gesture navigation, without contrast ratios that strain her aging eyes — is building something real. Not just a feature set. A relationship.
What Age-Inclusive Actually Means
The test for genuinely age-inclusive family technology is concrete: can the oldest and youngest members of the family use it, fully and independently, with the same dignity and ease as the adults in the middle?
This requires more than an accessibility checklist applied after the fact. It requires designing from both ends simultaneously. Large, high-contrast text and touch targets. Navigation that doesn't change without warning. Voice interaction as a first-class option for people whose hands or vision make screen interaction difficult. Interfaces for children that are genuinely age-appropriate — not infantilizing to older children but appropriate for young ones, with privacy architectures that don't depend on self-reported age.
Most importantly, it requires testing. Not with the product team's parents, not with a proxy population that roughly resembles older users, but with actual grandparents and actual young children who have never seen the product before. Their first-contact experience is the product's real design. Everything else is intention.
The grandmother in Florida who gave up after four tries wasn't failing at technology. She was encountering a product that wasn't designed for her, in a context that claimed to be exactly that. The gap between the claim and the reality is the work still to be done.
