When Families Outgrow Platforms: The Portability Imperative
Data portability is the difference between a family that owns its memories and one renting them from a platform that could disappear next Tuesday.
The announcement came on a Tuesday. Google+ was shutting down. Not gradually — users had a few months to migrate everything they'd uploaded, tagged, and organized over years of use. After that, it would simply be gone.
For most people, Google+ had become a curiosity by then, a platform that promised something and delivered something more modest. But for the families who had used it as their private sharing space — who'd carefully organized albums, written captions, stored the photos from the last Christmas before a parent died — the shutdown meant scrambling to export years of irreplaceable content before a corporate decision made it permanently inaccessible.
This is what data portability means in practice. Not an abstract digital rights principle, but a Tuesday morning email and a countdown timer.
The invisible lock-in
When a family chooses a platform to hold their memories, they are implicitly making a longer-term commitment than the platform acknowledges. The platform uses the language of a simple tool — "store your photos here," "share with family" — while its architecture creates something more binding: a situation where the effort required to leave becomes prohibitive over time.
The mechanism is straightforward. Every photo uploaded, caption written, memory organized, and connection built within a platform adds to the cost of moving. Technically, this is called lock-in: the more valuable a system becomes to you, the more it costs you to exit. Network effects compound this — if your family is already on Platform X, moving to Platform Y means convincing everyone to move with you, relearning an interface, re-uploading years of content, and accepting that you'll probably lose something in the migration.
Electronic Frontier Foundation researchers have documented extensively how this dynamic plays out across consumer platforms. Users who are dissatisfied with a platform often stay not because the platform is meeting their needs, but because leaving feels like too great a cost. The data is there, the connections are there, the years of organized content are there — and migrating all of it is a project no busy family ever seems to find time to complete.
For family memory specifically, the stakes of lock-in are unusually high. This isn't a productivity tool with a 90-day history. This is the record of a family across decades. The photos from a grandmother's last birthday. The voice recording a child made for a great-aunt she'd never meet. The video of a parent's hands teaching a grandchild to bake bread. These memories have no commercial value but enormous personal value — which means the family holding them will tolerate a great deal of platform dysfunction rather than risk losing them.
Platforms understand this. The cost of exit is, from a business perspective, a retention strategy.
When platforms change around you
The families most harmed by lock-in aren't necessarily the ones who try to leave voluntarily. They're the ones whose platforms change around them, through no choice of their own.
Acquisitions transform the privacy commitments a platform was built on. When a family-oriented service is acquired by a company with a different business model, the data collected under one set of promises becomes subject to a different set of uses. The new owners may not honor grandfathered terms. They may introduce advertising into a previously private space. They may restructure the service into something unrecognizable.
Shutdowns happen more often than most users expect. Platforms that seemed permanent — MySpace, Yahoo Groups, Google+ — have deleted years of content with a few months' notice or less. The 2019 MySpace incident was particularly stark: an estimated 50 million songs lost during a server migration, years of early social media history simply erased because the company's business interests had moved on. Yahoo Groups closed in 2020 with minimal transition time, taking decades of community archives with it. European data law responded to this dynamic with GDPR Article 20, which establishes data portability as a legal right: the ability to receive your personal data in a machine-readable format and transfer it to another service. The regulation was a recognition that the relationship between individuals and platforms had become structurally unequal, and that correcting it required legal intervention, not just market pressure.
But a legal right to export your data is different from actually being able to use it. Download a photo archive from any major platform and you'll typically receive a zip file containing thousands of files with opaque naming conventions, minimal metadata, and no structure that another platform will automatically understand. The right to portability exists in law. The actual experience of portability often doesn't.
What families actually need
The portability question is really a question about who owns family memory. The answer most platforms give, embedded in their architecture if not their marketing, is that they do. You are a user; they are the custodians. You can access your memories as long as the service runs. When the service doesn't run, you have whatever you were able to export.
Researchers at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center and other digital rights institutions have argued for a different model: one in which individuals and families are genuine stewards of their own data — able to move it, share it on their own terms, and withdraw it completely from any system they no longer trust. This framing treats portability not as a feature to be graciously offered, but as a baseline condition any ethical system must guarantee.
For family memory systems specifically, portability has several concrete requirements that go beyond a basic data export:
Format integrity — exported files should be in open, stable formats that will remain readable decades from now. JPEG is safer than a proprietary container. MP4 is safer than a platform-specific video format. The goal is readability in 2050, not just compatibility with today's migration tools.
Metadata preservation — the information attached to a memory is often as important as the memory itself. Who is in the photo. When it was taken. The note someone wrote about what the occasion was. A family memory export that strips metadata turns a rich archive into an undifferentiated pile of files.
Relationship structure — family memory isn't individual; it's collective. An export that preserves individual user data but loses the connections between members — who shared what, how memories are organized within the family's story — doesn't actually preserve what the family built together.
Guaranteed access regardless of platform status — ideally, export capability that doesn't depend on the originating platform remaining operational. A family's ability to retrieve their own memories should not be contingent on a company's business health.
Families should be able to leave any platform they no longer trust, at any time, with everything they came with. A system that makes leaving difficult is not worthy of the trust they placed in it to begin with.
The argument from trust
There is a paradox at the center of platform design that the portability imperative exposes. The more a platform makes it easy to leave, the more trustworthy it becomes — and therefore the less likely families are to actually leave.
A family that knows it can take everything, at any time, in a fully usable format, has a fundamentally different relationship with a platform than a family trapped by switching costs. The first family is choosing to stay. The second family is enduring staying. These feel different in ways that accumulate over years — in how enthusiastically families contribute, how honestly they engage, and whether they feel ownership or tenancy in the space where their memories live.
The platforms that do this well — and some do, to varying degrees — treat exit capability as a feature rather than a failure mode. They compete for continued use by delivering ongoing value, not by making departure expensive. This is not altruism; it is a different theory of what makes a platform worth building in the first place.
Research on generativity in technology suggests that open, portable, interoperable systems tend to earn more trust than closed ones over time, even when closed systems have short-term advantages. For family memory specifically, the argument is even more direct: a family that trusts a system to hold their most precious records will contribute to it more fully, across more generations, than a family that suspects — correctly — that it is trapped.
The longer horizon
Family memory should outlast any platform. The mechanisms for open, portable, human-readable data formats exist and are well understood. Preserving family archives in formats readable decades from now is technically achievable. The question is whether the platforms families use are built to do it.
A platform that holds family memories for twenty years and then makes them inaccessible has not served its users. It has extracted years of trust and contribution while providing the illusion of custody. The memories were never really safe — they were only available while the business model held.
Genuine stewardship means that the exit experience is as carefully designed as the onboarding experience. That portability is demonstrated, not just promised. That the formats used today will remain readable by the grandchildren who will want access to them.
Families don't always know to ask for this. "What happens to our memories if you shut down?" is not the first question that comes to mind when evaluating a photo-sharing app. But it is the question that matters most when the crisis arrives — and for a meaningful number of families, that crisis has already arrived, on a Tuesday morning, with a countdown timer and an archive of years that had to be saved all at once or lost forever.
