Deleting memories and your account
Deletion behaves differently for audio and for photos, and the difference is deliberate. Knowing which is which before you delete something matters.
Voice recordings: purged within minutes, not reversible
When you delete a voice recording it is purged within minutes rather than held for a recovery window, and the transcript is deleted with it. That pairing is the point: a transcript is a verbatim record of the same conversation, so erasing the audio while keeping the text would defeat the deletion entirely.
This deletion is not reversible. It is worth being clear about that before you act, because photos behave differently and a person who expects the same recovery window for both will lose a recording believing it recoverable.
Photos: a recovery window
Deleted photos go through a recovery window rather than being purged immediately, so an accidental deletion can be undone. If you need a photograph gone immediately rather than eventually, that is a different action from a routine delete.
Deleting your account
Deleting your account runs the same erasure across everything you added. It is not a deactivation and it is not a hidden archive kept in case you come back.
If a family archive has several contributors, think about what you want to happen to the family's shared record before you close an account — deletion is designed to be real, which also means it is not something to do casually on a shared archive.
Face signatures
If you turned people grouping on and then turn it off, your family's face signatures are deleted. They are also deleted when the family is deleted, when the photo they came from is deleted, and after three years without activity. The full schedule is published on the Biometric Data Policy page.
Common questions
- Can I undo deleting a voice recording?
- No. Voice recordings and transcripts are purged within minutes rather than held for a recovery window, and that is not reversible. Photos do have a recovery window; audio deliberately does not.
- Does deleting my account delete everything?
- Deleting your account runs the same erasure across everything you added, rather than deactivating it or moving it to a hidden archive.
- Are transcripts deleted with the audio?
- Yes. A transcript is a verbatim record of the same conversation, so it is deleted along with the recording it came from.
